Shepherd and Orca both place development surfaces around coding agents. The useful question is which workspace makes your repeated tasks easier to follow: starting work, seeing what needs attention, reviewing the result, and returning later.
This comparison covers Orca at onorca.dev. Its advertised features already include worktrees, SSH, browser review, and mobile companions. Shepherd’s comparison should therefore focus on workflow fit, with no claim that these broad capabilities are exclusive.
Start with platform and availability
Shepherd’s current public download is for Apple silicon Macs, with iOS marked coming soon. Orca advertises desktop downloads across macOS, Windows, and Linux, plus mobile companions. If another platform or a currently available mobile client is mandatory, that requirement can settle the shortlist before a feature comparison.
For a Mac-based trial, install and evaluate the versions you intend to use. Record those versions yourself; fast-moving documentation can describe behavior that differs from an older installed build.

Shepherd’s overview shows its agent monitor and continuation workflow. Orca’s terminal documentation describes its agent terminal information, splits, and scrollback behavior. These are starting points for a trial, not comparative performance results.
Compare the review loop in detail
Use a small interface change with an acceptance condition, such as a validation message appearing beside the correct field. In each workspace, ask the agent for the same result, run the relevant checks, and inspect the changed code.
Then open the interface and send one precise correction. Record whether the feedback points back to the intended file, page, or task. The number of panes matters less than whether you can understand what changed and give the agent useful feedback without losing your place.
For a remote project, include the development server and its network route. Shepherd describes forwarded localhost services in its remote-development section. Verify the equivalent setup in your Orca installation. A local preview alone does not test the remote workflow.
Separate continuity from reconstruction
Test closing the client while a harmless command runs, then reconnect. Check the original command, its working directory, and the surrounding layout. Next, review what the product documents for a host restart. Do not infer process survival from the reappearance of tabs or old terminal output.
Also distinguish an agent conversation from its terminal. A provider may resume a saved conversation in a new process. That can be useful, but it answers a different requirement from preserving the shell that was already running.
Choose by the friction you remove
Evaluate Shepherd if keeping persistent terminals, agent visibility, and review close together on your Mac is the main need. Evaluate Orca if its wider platform availability and advertised task environment match your requirements. When both meet the basic needs, let a real task decide rather than giving either product automatic points for every shared feature.
