Ghostty with tmux is a sensible remote-development setup when you want to choose each layer yourself. Shepherd is worth evaluating when you want persistent terminals, agent status, files, and reviews inside one macOS workspace. The useful comparison is the complete working environment you would use with each option.
What each layer owns
Ghostty provides the terminal application and its rendering and configuration. tmux manages sessions that can detach and reattach. SSH connects your computer to the host. In this arrangement, run tmux on the remote machine if that is where the work must continue after your laptop disconnects.
In Shepherd, the desktop is a view into persistent terminal sessions. Closing the app and reconnecting is intended to return you to the running work. Neither arrangement makes a process survive the execution host losing power. Keeping a process alive, restoring a layout, and resuming a saved agent conversation are three different promises.

Start with your existing workflow
List what you already rely on: copy mode, shell shortcuts, terminal themes, SSH aliases, port forwards, and editor commands. Keep the list concrete. “Good keyboard support” is difficult to evaluate; “I can find a failed test, copy its path, and open the file without using the mouse” is observable.
If your current setup is comfortable, preserving it has value. An integrated workspace needs to save you enough navigation or configuration work to justify learning new behavior. A feature checklist cannot measure that tradeoff on your behalf.
Compare one real remote task
Choose a small repository and an ordinary task, such as correcting a validation error with a regression test. In each setup, open the project, run the agent, keep a test command visible, and inspect the resulting diff. If there is a web interface, bring the remote development server into a local browser.
Then disconnect the client while a harmless long-running command is active. Reconnect and check the running command, working directory, scrollback, and pane arrangement separately. Do not use an important production operation for this exercise. Record which parts return automatically and which require your intervention.
Shepherd’s remote-development workflow includes routes to remote localhost services and access to remote files. For the composed stack, include the SSH forwarding and file tools you would actually use. Comparing an assembled workspace with a deliberately unconfigured terminal would tell you very little.
Switching does not transfer a live process
Treat a switch as a new entry point to your projects. Finish or leave existing tmux jobs running in their current sessions. Open a separate shell in Shepherd for your next task. Do not assume opening the same directory imports a tmux session or makes its agent history belong to the new workspace.
Keep the previous configuration until you have checked your most common workflows. The goal is to reduce friction in everyday work; recreating every old shortcut on day one is unnecessary.
Which setup fits?
Keep Ghostty and tmux when you value independent tools and already have a dependable remote workflow. Evaluate Shepherd when repeatedly finding agents, switching to files, and arranging review surfaces is taking attention away from the task. The deciding evidence is your own repeatable workflow, not an unsupported speed or memory ranking.
